All Boats Rise: The Kind of Leader I Choose to Be

There’s a phrase I’ve been thinking about a lot lately:
A rising tide lifts all boats.
It’s simple.
But it says everything about the kind of leader I aspire to be.
This Is Not About Competition
I’ve never been wired to believe that in order for me to grow, someone else has to
shrink.
That mindset doesn’t sit right with me.
It never has.
I don’t want to climb over people.
I don’t want to outshine others by dimming their light.
And I don’t want success that comes at the expense of someone else’s growth.
That’s not who I am.
This Is About Walking Alongside Others
What I do want is to walk alongside people.
To support them.
To encourage them.
To open doors when I can.
To share what I’ve learned — the good, the hard, and everything in between.
I want to be the kind of leader who says:
“Come with me.”
Not “Watch me.”
Because leadership, at its best, isn’t about standing above people.
It’s about standing with them.
I’m Not Afraid of Someone Outgrowing Me
In fact — that’s the goal.
If someone I’ve mentored, supported, or walked alongside grows beyond me…
that is not a threat.
That is a win.
It means:
They were given space to grow
They were supported along the way
They were encouraged to step into their full potential
And that’s exactly what I want for people.
Because Success Isn’t Meant to Be Experienced Alone
I’ve learned something over the years:
Success without others isn’t nearly as meaningful.
The moments that stay with me aren’t just my own achievements.
They’re the moments where:
Someone gained confidence
Someone stepped into a new opportunity
Someone realized they were capable of more
Those are the moments that matter.
What Fulfills Me Most
Nothing — and I mean nothing — is more fulfilling to me than helping someone else
succeed.
Whether it’s:
offering guidance
making a connection
sharing an opportunity
or simply being someone who listens and believes in them
Those moments are where I feel most aligned with my purpose.
The Kind of Leader I’m Committed to Being
I’m not perfect.
I’m still learning.
I’m still growing.
But I am clear on this:
I want to be a leader who helps all boats rise.
A leader who:
creates space, not competition
builds others up, not holds them back
celebrates growth — even when it outpaces my own
walks alongside people instead of ahead of them
Because leadership isn’t about how far you go alone.
It’s about how many people you bring with you.
Key Takeaways
You don’t have to push others down to grow. There is room for everyone.
Leadership is about walking alongside, not standing above.
Helping others succeed is one of the most meaningful forms of success.
When others grow beyond you, it’s not a threat — it’s a reflection of your
leadership.
Success is more fulfilling when it’s shared.
The goal isn’t just to rise — it’s to rise together.
