The Power of ‘Help Me Understand'

THE MOST UNDERRATED LEADERSHIP TOOL: THREE LITTLE WORDS

“Help me understand…”

Some people think leadership is about knowing the right answers.

I think leadership is about asking the right questions.

And the most transformative phrase in my professional life has been:

“Help me understand.”

Or its close cousin:

“Tell me more.”

These simple phrases do three things instantly:

1. They lower defenses.

People stop bracing for judgment and start sharing honestly.

2. They reveal the story beneath the story.

There’s always more context, emotion, or fear than what’s said out loud.

3. They build trust.

You’re not interrogating — you’re connecting.

I’ve used it with colleagues, clients, overwhelmed parents at public meetings, even with my kids when their teenage brains are half logic, half chaos.

Because when you say “help me understand,” you’re really saying:

“I’m here.”

“I’m listening.”

“I value your perspective.”

And here’s the twist:

It works on yourself too.

“Help me understand why this is bothering me.”

“Help me understand what I need right now.”

“Help me understand where my fear is coming from.”

The Lesson

Curiosity is a bridge.

Assumptions are walls.

And most conflict isn’t conflict at all — it’s misunderstanding waiting to be softened by conversation.

My Unfiltered Truth

If more people asked “help me understand,” we’d have fewer arguments, stronger teams, and maybe a calmer world.

Try it.

It’s leadership magic disguised as kindness.
